One should invest in good quality mutual funds which can give you more edge over your investment as compared to direct stock market investment.

Safety of mutual fund investments depend on what you are comparing with. Ofcourse a sip investment plan by Kotak Mutual Funds is safer than a regular mutual fund as in SIP, the risk is reduced as a result of diversified investment. You can start by investing small amounts in SIP and increasing gradually.

What is the minimum period for which a mutual fund should be maintained in order to see the growth or increase in money that one is expecting?? I have heard that its good to go for 3 years at least. Is it?

Yes, I would as it is less risky and the return is stable. However, it is little slow as well as low on returns as compared to the stock market investment.

It is always wise to analyze where you are investing and then to decide how much you'll be investing. The risk is reduced when investments are diversified, as a mutual fund is a combination of securities and advisable rather than bet on only a single stock.

I use to think that Mutual funds are always a win-win situation for everyone, but after proper researching and understanding now I don't think this is the case always.

Investing in Mutual Funds is still a safe bet. Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI) regulates Mutual Fund companies. SEBI approves each mutual fund scheme, which the Mutual Fund company brings to investors. Mutual fund companies are subject to regular audit. You can equate risk withholding period. If your holding period is longer the risk is lower. The returns also depend on the fund in which you invest your money and your risk-taking abilities. Stocks are better than debt instruments in the long run. There are two ways to invest in Mutual Funds either with a lump sum or with SIP(Systematic Investment Plan). SIP is considered safer because you invest a fixed amount monthly.
