New Delhi: Once upon a time, there was a motorcycle called the Yamaha RX100, which reached 60 kmph from zero in around six seconds flat, and became the heartthrob of a generation used to cranky Yezdis and hulking Bullets.

It was the mid-eighties, and the RX100’s quick success was followed by similar 100cc bikes sporting Suzuki, Kawasaki and Honda badges, but the Yamaha stood a class apart. As its tagline said: “Ahead of the 100s”.

Its rivals managed to survive much longer in various avatars, but the Yamaha RX100 was the first to go. The icon of a generation could not meet the new emission standards, and before the turn of the century, the RX100 was history.

The RX100 ended as a footnote in India’s struggle for cleaner air, which started playing out a few years earlier, and is still playing out in various courts and automobile research and development (R&D) units.

    Where does one begin?
