Deep otm will not give you an edge. You can backtest it forward test
The loss is usually due to market going against our views
To test, look at the price today for deep otm put and call
As well as price today of itm call and put
Then assuming you have taken 10k of calls or puts see the loss or gains and you’ll notice most loss and gains are same
What I think you need to do is take far dated calls or puts and mostly “in the money” calls or puts as the iv on them is lowest
Either way if your views are wrong, you’ll make a loss.
The best time to make money on options is when market is at very stretched positions. Usually it’s risky to take puts as over long run stocks go up. But if you wait for a right opportunity and markets fall or retrace substantially and you take a far dated itm calls you have lot of things in your favour to walk out atleast at break even if not profitable

You are right. I couldn’t find any that generated 50% return over that long a period. I was thinking Nick Sleep of Nomad had done it, but my memory failed me, hence the mistake. Here is buffet on achieving 50% annual returns.
Following are some investors who have achieved 20% on a long-term basis. There are probably many others than you can find yourself.
Peter Lynch 29% over 13 years
Ed Thorpe 20% over 30 years (but not a value investor?)
Warren Buffet 30% over 10 years
Nick Sleep 20% over 15 years

Zomato – Should you order? (28-01-2024)
In case Zomato starts giving loans to restaurants, those loans will be secured by the cash that goes to them through Zomato, it will be holding that. But I believe its all about thinking too much from now. As of now they have majorly 3 business and we should try to calculate the earnings from them. I believe FY2025 Zomato will be ending between 2000 crores to 2500 crores of net profits and looking at the valuations that D-mart and Reliance retail is getting at this growth Zomato can also get a 100 multiple.

Multi-Disciplinary Reading – Book Reviews (28-01-2024)
The Age of Scientific Wellness: Why the Future of Medicine Is Personalized, Predictive, Data-Rich, and in Your Hands by Leroy Hood and Nathan Price (2023)
In this book the authors argue that the contemporary medical paradigm is one of “sickcare” rather than that of “healthcare.” To elaborate, in today’s world, the medical interventions happen long after a disease has taken hold, following a centuries-old medical playbook that goes like this: Wait for something to go wrong → Try to identify what caused the problem → Try to fix it → If it works, try the same approach on the next person → If it doesn’t work, treat the complications—or write a death certificate and move along.
But, it doesn’t have to be this way…and it shall not remain this way for too long.
The authors say that we are in the first stage of the largest paradigm shift in healthcare since the beginning of modern medicine. In the times to come the way we approach health will change so profoundly that we will struggle to understand why we ever did things any other way. In a not-too-distant future the healthcare will focus on the optimization of individual wellness and early detection of wellness-to-disease transitions with a potential for reversal before the emergence of clinically diagnosable disease.
This paradigm shift will be brought about by (1) systems-based approached for modeling human physiology a.k.a. “systems biology” (2) collection & mining of vast troves genomic, phenomic and digital data for all individuals (3) AI (4) having better understanding of biological aging and the on-going research of reversing biological aging (5) better understanding of brain and neurological disorders (6) immunotherapy for cancer.
My notes below don’t do justice to the depth and to the ‘interconnectedness of chapters’ of this book. If you are interested in the future of healthcare, then do give it a read.
The Rise of Systems Biology

Currently, we study biological systems one gene at a time, one protein at a time, one disease symptom at a time, ignoring the ever-mounting evidence that there are very few processes in our bodies in which A causes B, and B causes C, and so on in a simple, linear manner. Biology generally operates as complex systems rather than linear pathways.

Despite the tremendous advances that gene and protein sequencing offered us, most of the research world is still locked in classically reductionist research.

Mining vast troves of information

The second is the phenome, an assessment of your body’s status at any point in time during your life as a result of the interaction of your genome, your lifestyle, and your environment. Understanding Genetic Risk

Genetics that affect the risk of disease fall into three categories: dominant genes, recessive genes, and polygenic risk scores.

Dominant genes are responsible for diseases that can be caused by a single copy of the “bad” gene. Most dominant genes have lower degrees of penetrance, meaning they elevate the risk, but disease is not a certainty. This is the case with BRCA1 and BRCA2, the breast and ovarian cancer genes.

An individual needs two copies of a defective gene, however, to inherit a so-called Mendelian recessive genetic disease like in sickle cell anemia, cystic fibrosis, Tay-Sachs disease, and hemochromatosis.

Protein folding: There is a long-standing “grand challenge” for computational biology: being able to predict the shape of a folded protein given just its gene (amino acid) sequence. This is an ideal problem for data-driven AI in that it is well defined, offers concrete ways of measuring “better” or “worse” predictions.

It’s also a question of great importance, because the shape of a protein determines its function—what chemical reactions it may catalyze, what molecular machines it will help build as multiprotein complexes, and how it interacts with other molecules to assemble cells, tissues, and organs. Thank you for clarification, I missed this part from the latest concall. While margins was not my primary concern, it is the contradicting statements that was concerning. Looks like they are interested in CV & tractor business but not in PV steel business and this is inline with the statements made in July. I am not completely convinced that the margins are going to be significantly higher but we can wait and see to how this pans out.

Any decent company will put ads of its products to increase sales which result in increase in share price.
If for any company if we see ads talking about its technicals or bonus issue, it is done with an intention.
Ads are costly in general and financial category ads are costliest. Retail don’t have this money.
It is more likely to be done by operator or promoter who want to dump(or even exit) the stock.
I think many other people might have also seen the ads of this company. They can confirm the content of the ads

I’m not against any particular style of investing but having been in the market for quite sometime and observed several investors (both successful and unsuccessful) over a period of time, I believe that one can not be both trader and investor at the same time. Long term investors share certain characteristics that traders find it very difficult to emulate and vice-versa. That said there are enough statistics available that favor long term investing as a more effective means to generate superior wealth than trading.
To me having 40-60 stocks in one’s portfolio with constant churn is not long term investing but more of a trading style which chases momentum and narrative. In a prolonged bull market (like the one we are seeing currently) narrative and momentum trump fundamentals and every second stock is a winner. In 2023, over 1600 stocks delivered more than 50% return. My own portfolio generated more than 50% return but I only attribute this to the luck of being in the market than any specific skill I possess.
There have been so many cases of promoters of small caps/micro siphoning off funds, cooking books and colluding with operators to run the stocks. Their narrative to the market is always rosy and they always say the right things in interviews/concalls to convince the common investors that their company is the next best thing. You will see such companies doing very well during bull market and not so good during bear market.
For new investors it’s safe to stay with quality names than take too much risks get into small and microcaps where it’s very hard to assess quality of management. No reading of financial reports or management commentary will help unless one has direct access to the management (and even then there is no guarantee). If 15% CAGR with all the risks of small caps/microcaps investing is goal, buying an Nifty ETF will generate better return on a risk adjusted basis.
Steel Strips Wheels Limited – Attractive Valuations (28-01-2024)
This acquisition dosent necessarily have to be a low margin providing business. SSWL has been running 100% utilization for large steel wheels i.e Trucks and tractors, there is demand which company is falling short to meet. To meet this demand company would have been forced to do capex ( greenfield ) which for a 50000 large wheels would have cost the company ~ 100 cr . The ASP
per wheel of ~ Rs.1400 is a blended mix of all types of wheels that can be produced at AMW facility if the company decides to only manufacture large wheels than the ASP will reach in access of Rs.4000 .
The company acquisition of AMW benefits in following ways
• De-risk from doing large capex on the steel side
• AMW has a land bank of 61 acres
• Multiple lines that can manufacture different wheels for 2 wheelers, 3 wheeler, 4 wheeler, Tractors and Trucks
• Meeting any demand scenario for any wheel type
