Portfolio of a novice investor (14-11-2023)
I have been focusing much more these days in restructuring my portfolio and very soon will share the updated holdings. Trimmed the portfolio quite a bit and added / increased the holdings in few conviction stocks which are better valued in my view.
One thing which I wanted to share with the group is the Checklist that I have created recently. The stocks that I will think to invest in must fare well as per this Checklist before I dig deep into financials, technical (this has become a key consideration for me these days) and quality of business. If the company scores poorly under this checklist, more often I don’t proceed further. These are all fundamental related aspects. Having said this, there are a few stocks that I bought recently just based on conviction or better technical aspects, so it’s not a hard barrier for me, rather a soft gate criteria.
Here is a brief description of the Checklist. This is WIP and I may tweak this a little or more or add few more parameters in future. There are total 33 parameters as of now and I score each one of them equally to get a final score. If the score is below 20, I normally don’t proceed further as I mentioned above. Having said this, if the score is poor under DCF valuations and overall score is still more than 20, I try to avoid such companies.
Views are appreciated! Thanks in advance!
Cheers!
AJ
Investing Basics – Feel free to ask the most basic questions (14-11-2023)
Best person to ask this question is to your dad. He can explain inflation better. When dad tells his experience, its easy to relate to inflation.

Normally yes and it depends from person to person. When dealing with your manager you should negotiate considering the future unpredictability
and importance of holiday this year(analogous to inflation).
For you, the number of holidays next year can be 5,6,7,8,9 or even 4 depending upon your calculation of unpredictability and importance of holiday this year.
I have not explained the discount rate in its true form as I think the Pat Dorsey has explained it better later in this book.

Thanks for you response I just want to ask… does this mean I’ll ask for a 5 days leave this year instead of 6 days next year? Can you please read my question again maybe I am having some trouble grasping the English
Will this Bull Market last forever? (14-11-2023)
Stock market has multiple phases, besides Bull and Bear we hv steady, range bound and indecisiveness market. It’s reflects both sentiments and economy growth & money supply.
I like to focus on growth in companies, and profits… Find such companies and grow.

Pat Dorsey has explained the discounted cashflow later in this book. Keep reading is my suggestion.
Because future brings unpredictability and inflation, and you should charge for it like bank does to cover NPA and inflation.
What if you change your company? (unpredictability)
What if your manger changes? (unpredictability)
What if you needed to attend some funeral? (inflation)
What if you need to attend your sister wedding? (inflation)
The Anti-Portfolio (14-11-2023)
Thanks! I don’t think it’s been that difficult, post corona bull run helped a lot, especially sticking to small cap worked wonders Though indeed cagr includes the worst slump in small caps in 2018-19. Thankfully 30% capital was deployed as it was ending, but again just before March 2020 disaster
Tumultuous times truly!
Mostly value pickr folks have helped a lot. First thing to have good sleep and enjoy decent returns is to invest some effort in trying to understand better the stock story. It’s the conviction after all which helps manage risk as well as returns.
Explosion of social media adds to the exposure of ideas, knowledge and opinions. Rarely I run screens since it requires some digging into.
I am mostly a fundamental guy, sometimes technical signal are very visible too which helps, but I don’t think have used it for selling.
It’s simply the upside margin you have, in your opinion, from the current price to fair value, which if large enough is good for entry and if not comfortable then booking out. Considering that the time limit, again in your considered opinion, for closing such gaps favour your cagr targets.

I have given the link to the books recommendation by Dr. Hitesh. Books are the standard way of learning something, as they are detailed and dedicated works. If you are an absolute beginner, I guess reading a book will give you some idea, and you can search online later.
