Michael Patra, Deputy Governor of the Reserve Bank of India stated yesterday that there is broad consensus that the centre of gravity of the global economic order is moving eastwards to Asia. This growth performance is expected to be underpinned by the resilience of domestic drivers. Overall, Asia will likely contribute about two-thirds of global growth in 2024, a carryover of its blockbuster performance in 2023. Another noteworthy development is that disinflation is expected to remain on track in Asia and convergence with central bank targets is being sighted. Thus, the outlook for Asia in a stormy and unsettled global environment is one of sustained growth with stability.

All-India Consumer Price Index Number for Agricultural Labourers up marginally in January compared to December (21-02-2024)
The All-India Consumer Price Index Number for Agricultural Labourers and Rural Labourers (Base: 1986-87=100) for the month of January, 2024 increased by 1 point each to stand at 1258 and 1268 points respectively. The major contribution towards rise in the general index of Agricultural Labourers and Rural Labourers came from miscellaneous group to the extent of 1.57 and 1.55 points and fuel and light group to the extent of 1.16 and 1.10 points respectively mainly due to increase in prices of medicines, doctors' fees, barber charges, washing soap, cinema tickets, firewood, etc. There had been a mixed trend in the indices of constituent States. For both CPI-AL and CPI-RL, ten states experienced a decrease in index while one state saw no change in index.

Bank of England Governor Andrew Bailey said on Tuesday that the central bank saw clear signs of an upturn in Britain's economy. Bailey said bets by investors on interest rate cuts this year were not unreasonable but he also pointed to clear signs of an upturn in Britain's economy after it fell into recession at the end of last year. Investors are awaiting clarity from the Fed minutes due later in the global day that comes following last week's hotter-than-expectation US inflation data. GBPUSD is quoting at $1.2637, up 0.13% on the day. With lack of economic data from UK docket, the pair is likely to track dollar for cues all through the day.
