Rahul Gandhi’s conviction in defamation case: Offence not serious nor involves moral turpitude but consequences irreversible, says Singhvi in HC

Congress leader Rahul Gandhi’s lawyer, Abhishek Singhvi, has argued in Gujarat High Court that the defamation case for which Gandhi was sentenced to two years in jail is not a serious offence that involves moral turpitude. Singhvi requested the court to grant a stay on Gandhi’s conviction in a 2019 case filed by a Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) MLA over his “Modi surname” remark. If sentenced, Gandhi could permanently lose his Wayanad Lok Sabha seat.
