Passenger vehicle sales increased in April, while commercial vehicle sales plummeted due to pre-buying in March before the stricter BS-VI Phase 2 norms kicked in. Market leader Tata Motors saw sales drop by 52%, while Ashok Leyland trucks and buses declined by 53%. The tractors segment experienced a double-digit fall in sales because of unseasonal rains. Experts predicted CV sales would recover to pre-pandemic levels by FY24 because of government infrastructure projects. Motorcycle sales slumped slightly, but Maruti Suzuki and Tata Motors both experienced growth.
