For sugar companies, both ethanol and sugar prices are not under their control. both are determined by govt. (sugar – govt controls supply and hence price). at current sugar price (which has increased over few months both ethanol and sugar make same margin. With sugar prices going up further, companies will make more sugar. but ethanol also makes good margins. so companies will want to crush more cane and make both – it is a volume game now…
