What i personally do is use Bluechips or Large Caps as anchor stocks. They will hold a chunk of my funds and will give a steady growth without much risk. The remaining capital is allocated to midcap or small cap where there are opportunities for multi baggers. This way you get some downside support. As you spend more time in the industry and are able to read midcaps and small caps better, you can reduce your allocation to large caps. I myself am into my 5th year of investing and right now have about 40-45% of my portfolio in large caps, down from 80% a few years back.
