Rather , I have taken exactly opposite approach of what you are suggesting.
I have direct stock portfolio of large cap and midcap or those stocks which are at the border line of midcap and large cap, while small cap , i am using small cap mutual funds and they are giving excellent returns , like sbi small cap fund which has given 25% cagr in last 10 years and nippon small cap fund… The reasoning behind is, these fund houses has reach and bandwidth to explore small cap universe , better than us. With their kind of resources and accessibility to management, which we can never achieve.
