Sharad Pawar, the chief of the Nationalist Congress Party in India, plans to encourage opposition parties to establish unity with a shared minimum programme aimed at providing an alternative to the country’s current governing party, led by Narendra Modi. Pawar, who made the announcement after the majority of states where Modi’s Bharatiya Janata Party holds power had rejected it, will present this as his view at the upcoming meeting of opposition parties in Patna, Bihar, on 23 June.
