The run-up to the July 8 panchayat polls in West Bengal has been fraught with violence. A brother-in-law of a Bharatiya Janata Party candidate, Sambhu Das, was found murdered with stab wounds near a pond in Cooch Behar district. The BJP has alleged Trinamool Congress supporters were responsible, but this has been denied by the state’s minister for Trinamool’s Dinhata MLA Udayan Guha. Meanwhile, in Sujapur area, Trianmool candidate Mustafa Sheikh was killed by attackers, according to police.
