Odisha’s Naveen Patnaik has become the second-longest-serving Chief Minister of any Indian state. Patnaik, who has been in power for more than 23 years, overtakes West Bengal’s Jyoti Basu, who served for 23 years and 137 days. Only former Sikkim Chief Minister Pawan Kumar Chamling has held the role for longer, serving for more than 24 years. Should Patnaik’s BJD party win the 2024 elections, he will overtake Chamling to become the longest-serving Chief Minister in Indian history.
