Law Minister Arjun Ram Meghwal defends bill to appoint CEC, ECs

Law Minister Arjun Ram Meghwal has defended the bill which proposes that the Chief Justice of India does not take part in the panel for selecting election commissioners or the chief election commissioner. Meghwal explained that the previous law did not detail the method for appointment of the members of the poll panel. The new bill suggests a search committee headed by the cabinet secretary to shortlist five names, then a selection committee headed by the prime minister will make the appointments.
