The Governor of Assam has formed a five-member committee to draft legislation that would ban polygamy and inter-religious marriages by false identity, also known as “Love Jihad.” The committee, which includes the Advocate General of Assam and the Assam Director General of Police, has been given 45 days to submit the draft legislation. The Assam government had previously sought public comments on the proposed law, with the majority of responses supporting the bill. The Expert Committee’s report recommended that the state legislature is competent to enact a law to ban polygamy, citing constitutional provisions and court rulings.
