The National Commission of Backward Classes (NCBC) has asked the state government of West Bengal to provide records dating back to the Imperial Gazetteer to verify the status of 87 castes recommended for inclusion in the Central List of Other Backward Classes (OBCs). Of these 87 castes, 80 belong to the Muslim community. The NCBC has expressed concern over the high number of Muslim castes being recommended for inclusion in a Hindu-majority state. The state government has been asked to check if these castes were classified as OBCs before converting to Islam.
