Members of the Rajya Sabha, the Upper House of Parliament in India, have shown support for a bill that aims to provide 33% reservation for women in the Lower House of Parliament and state assemblies. Some opposition members have criticized the move as an election gimmick. During the debate, the need to accelerate the process of women’s reservation was highlighted, with suggestions to use the 2011 Census as a benchmark and to appoint a delimitation commission.
