Defamatory speech in Parliament, Assembly not a crime, legislators have full freedom of speech: SC
The court ruled that an act of defamation on the floor of the House is not a crime. The proposition was put forward to defend JMM MLA Sita Soren against bribery allegations. The court emphasized the immunity granted to lawmakers for anything said or vote cast in the House. The verdict reserved by the bench aims to review the 25-year-old ruling that provided immunity to MPs and MLAs who accepted bribes for their votes in Parliament.
