Opposition parties in India have criticized a recommendation by the National Council of Educational Research and Training (NCERT) to replace the word “India” with “Bharat” in school textbooks. The parties argue that the ruling BJP is attempting to rewrite history and is taking desperate measures to hold onto power. The debate over using “Bharat” instead of “India” has intensified after the opposition bloc named itself the Indian National Developmental Inclusive Alliance (INDIA). The NCERT committee has also suggested introducing classical history and the Indian Knowledge System in the curriculum. The NCERT chairman has stated that no decision has been made yet on the recommendations.
