Lepakshi’s historical importance is connected to the Ramayana, with the belief that the injured bird Jatayu, wounded by Ravana during the abduction of Goddess Sita, descended at this site after a intense battle. Providing Moksha to the dying Jatayu, Lord Rama was informed by the bird about Sita being taken south by Ravana.
