The West Bengal Police arrested TMC leader Ajit Maity in Sandeshkhali, North 24 Parganas district, on charges of land grabbing from villagers. Maiti, a close aide of absconding TMC strongman Shahjahan Sheikh, was detained after villagers complained about land grabbing. Shajahan is accused of forcibly acquiring land and torturing local women. The arrest follows a TMC delegation’s visit to Sandeshkhali to address grievances of villagers protesting against alleged atrocities by local TMC leaders. The area has been tense for over a month due to protests against Shahjahan and his supporters.
