The Income Tax Appellate Tribunal dismissed the Congress party’s appeal against a penalty imposed for tax return discrepancies, prompting the party to explore legal options and plan to move the high court soon. The tribunal upheld the penalty of Rs 210 crore imposed by the Income Tax department. Congress treasurer Ajay Maken criticized the timing of the decision, alleging it was politically motivated as it coincides with the national elections. He expressed concern over the freeze on the party’s funds, stating it severely hampers their ability to contest elections and function effectively.
