West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee reaffirmed her opposition to the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA), stating that it is linked to the National Register of Citizens (NRC), and she does not want detention camps in West Bengal like those in Assam. She criticized the CAA as a “political gimmick” ahead of Lok Sabha polls. Banerjee’s comments come after the central government issued rules for the CAA, which grants Indian nationality to persecuted non-Muslim migrants from Bangladesh, Pakistan, and Afghanistan who arrived in India before December 31, 2014.
