Should jailed politicians be allowed to campaign for elections? PIL moved in Delhi High Court
A public interest litigation (PIL) has been filed in the Delhi High Court, advocating for the Election Commission of India (ECI) to implement a system allowing arrested political figures to continue campaigning during elections, potentially through video conferencing. The initiative was taken by a law student from Jamia Millia Islamia, Amarjeet Gupta, in response to the arrest of Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal over alleged irregularities in a liquor policy case. The PIL criticises the timing of political leaders' arrests during the enforcement of the ECI's model code of conduct for the Lok Sabha elections, particularly highlighting Kejriwal's arrest by the Enforcement Directorate on March 21.
