Voices within the ruling Congress are growing louder, calling for a reassessment of the five guarantees, after the party’s disappointing performance in the Lok Sabha polls despite pledging Rs 52,000 crore annually to these programs. The guarantees, which include free bus rides for women, free electricity up to 200 units a month, and a cash transfer of Rs 2000 per month per woman head of a family, were a key part of the party’s campaign in the assembly polls last year.
