Workers of Tata Steel UK is about to begin strike in Port Talbot and Llanwern in Wales. Around 1,500 steelworkers will begin their strike from around July 8 over the company’s plans to close two blast furnaces and cut up to 2,800 jobs, the trade union Unite said on June 21, 2024.
This is the first time in 40 years that the steelworkers of Tata Steel UK have went on strike at Tata’s Port Talbot.
The closing of the two old blast furnaces is one of the reason for the strike and also the fear of losing 2,800 jobs.
“Tata’s workers are not just fighting for their jobs – they are fighting for the future of their communities and the future of steel in Wales,” said Unite general secretary Sharon Graham.
As the company are planning to develop their operations in India, there won’t be any big concern for the Company.
The Company has expected to create more indirect jobs in engineering and construction and reduce carbon dioxide emissions by five million tonnes each year.
