Om Birla, the NDA candidate, was declared Lok Sabha Speaker on Wednesday after Prime Minister Narendra Modi moved a motion in his support. Birla, a three-time MP from Kota, Rajasthan, competed against Congress’ K. Suresh, an eight-term MP from Mavelikara, Kerala. This marks the fourth contested Speaker election in Lok Sabha history.
