The hospitality industry has seen plenty of interest since the catastrophic impact of the pandemic, which led to losses in FY21. The hotel industry market cap has more than tripled since 2019 on the combination of a strong earnings rebound and positive surprises, as well as three recent listings. The industry has good tailwinds. The anticipation is, demand for rooms will outrun supply for a few years despite capacity expansions.

Climate change is a challenge for monetary policy: RBI (08-04-2024)
Frequent weather shocks caused by climate change pose challenges for the monetary policy as well as downside risks to economic growth, a Reserve Bank report said. Global average temperatures are on a rise, with accompanying increase in extreme weather events (EWE), and the economic and social impact of global warming is becoming increasingly evident, said RBI’s Monetary Policy Report – April 2024. The report said that climate change has increased the frequency and ferocity of weather shocks, posing challenges for monetary policy.
Wipro’s leadership crisis gets more severe (08-04-2024)
The writing has been on the wall for some time. Exodus of senior leadership and growth behind its peers are reasons that have prompted Thierry Delaporte, the chief executive officer (CEO) of Wipro to resign, analysts said. Delaporte, Wipro’s seventh CEO, also resigned without completing his five-year term, like his predecessor Abidali Neemuchwala decided to end his tenure prematurely in 2020. Phil Fersht, HFS Research CEO and chief analyst believes the change in leadership was at least six months overdue.

Sebi cracks down on finfluencer; to impound Rs 12 cr (08-04-2024)
Sebi has barred Ravindra Bharti Education Institute, co-founded by finfluencer and YouTuber Ravindra Balu Bharti, from the securities market and directed to deposit Rs 12 crore “unlawful gain” earned from the alleged unregistered investment advisory business. It has been directed to deposit the amount to an interest-bearing escrow account created specifically for the purpose in a nationalised bank. Additionally, the regulator has barred Ravindra Balu Bharti, his wife Shubhangi Ravindra Bharti and directors — Rahul Ananta Gosavi and Dhanashri Chandrakant Gosavi — from the securities market.
In a 1st, India’s demat tally surges past 150 mn mark (08-04-2024)
The number of dematerialised (demat) accounts – required to hold shares and other securities in electronics format – crossed the 150-million mark for the first time in March. In March, 3.12 million new demat accounts were added despite a spike in market volatility, taking the total count to 151.4 million. The milestone has come 19 months after the total number of demat accounts hit the 100-million mark, a sign that more domestic households are taking to direct equity investing.
In FDI, China’s loss is not India’s gain (08-04-2024)
Despite all the noise around India’s chance to leverage the China-plus one strategy, India’s share of global foreign direct investment (FDI) inflows fell from 3.5 per cent in the first nine months of 2022 to 2.19 per cent in the same period in 2023, according to OECD data. The sharp drop of 54 per cent is much steeper than the overall global FDI inflow decline of 26 per cent in the first nine months. FDI inflows to China have fallen dramatically from a share of 12.5 per cent in the first nine months of 2022 to only 1.7 per cent in the same period in 2023.
