Is Buy and Forget a Myth? (04-04-2024)
Many of this multi bagger stories like Waree you mentioned have an insider element in them… if you knew greatness of this company you would have invested more than 3L just as a validation… so luck and serendipity plays role than your investing skills… many examples like a Suzlon or Reliance Power fits this logic… If all your stocks were like would you call it an investing strategy ?

Sugar Cycles: 7-8 years of losses followed by 2-3 years of super gains! (04-04-2024)
London refined sugar price is USD 652 per ton – which translates to Rs 55/ kg – much higher compared to wholesale price of Rs. 40 in India. Govt. has done a good job of keeping prices in control by banning exports and ethanol.
Due to this all sugar mills have cancelled their ethanol expansion plans and are looking at alternate uses like CBG, bio-chemicals. Triveni is diversifying into branded alcohol !
On hindsight export and ethanol ban have been good for the industry – companies will focus on higher margin products rather than sugar/ ethanol. Sugar prices are currently about 37-38 ex mill which will lead to higher margins compared to last year (after higher SAP prices). Next year prices are going to be higher by few Rupees which will absorb increase in FRP/SAP and margins will be even higher. By then alternate uses like bio-plastics of Balrampur, etc will be in place and hence prices of sugar will sustain.
Given all this valuation of sugar sector is lower than fair value. I expect more share buybacks to happen next year.
I think ethanol blending target of 20% will happen only by 2030 as not enough cane is available and even grain based ethanol is not making money due to high grain prices. Whatever the scenario, ethanol will not negatively affect the sector. In case Govt allows ethanol sugar prices will increase and profits of sugar mills will be higher.
One thing everyone has to understand (incl govt) is that only profitable sugar companies can make this sector sustainable and ultimately benefit the farmers.

Hello
Every catch all principle has a shelf life … this strategy of buying stocks not in Mutual funds list works to the extent that it is a deserving company but is ignored because it is small. It may continue this way for a long time. and Mutual fund analysts have a lot of smarts …
and people still invest in marquee names like HDFC etc… because India is still small by world standards … so when economy grows they will also grow … with less risk ( usually people ignore risk in unknown names )

Oil India- has its time come? (04-04-2024)
Would like to see their reserves replacement metric. In any oilfield it’s easier to increase production by drilling more wells or doing lots of workover. Although that might give a short term boost to production performance, it’s not a long term answer to natural production decline which is natural for every reservoir. A company needs to continuously build its reserves through exploration or M&A or both.
ONGC by the way, a couple of decades ago, adopted similar strategy of drilling lots of wells (under pressure from government to increase production) in Bombay High field and that did a grave damage to the reservoirs impacting long term recovery.
Tata Investment Corporation: Unusual discount to NAV (04-04-2024)
I was checking MF returns of tier-1 AMCs and all of them are delivering 18-20% CAGR (for large caps). Treasury works just like your typical fund house. So yes I’m reasonably sure average returns on cash and equivalents should be in that range.
