Investment strategy review (Long term) (29-01-2024)
Hi Naman, apologies for late response was travelling for the last couple of days.
Yes, that’s my plan but the issue with me is I’m not sure where to invest as of now. I’ve done research but I’m not sure what’s that ‘one thing’ that I should start with. Equities can give the highest return (which to be clear is not what I’m aiming for just even some good annual return of 12-15% will be a good start for me) but they require a lot of research + you have to stay in track. Which is a good thing as you learn a lot. But again, as others said boosting my source of income should be my priority and I get only 2 days a week for working on that along with learning about the places I have invested in. So, it’s not possible for me to give so much time to the equities I have invested on. In the mean time I wanted to invest on ‘something’ which is ‘safe’ and can give at least somewhat compounded interests. Higher the better but at least 12-15% is what I’m aiming for. Say something like mutual funds. Because time is the biggest factor when it comes to investing. I read this story and it was quite fascinating to me that how much time impacts investing. Hence I’m so worried about investing early and my money being inflated. Though I completely agree with you that people make mess when they are in hurry hence I came to this amazing forum where I can learn from amazing folks who know a lot more than me. I just need to find that ‘one thing’ in which I can get started. So far index funds look good and ‘safe’ along with some small cap funds (at least in long term with good returns) but I have heard news that currently we are going through a bull run so it might go down soon nothing a long term investor needs to worry about but what if the mutual funds I invested in went down with it. That’s why where to start is confusing me a lot. If I found it. I’ll probably invest an sip on that of less for now (say 5k per month) and keep on increasing it on yearly basis to a higher monthly sip which meets my set money goal according to the give time period I have.
Thanks!

All infra companies are overvalued. they are taking too many projects and any delay will hit them hard. this is a repeat of what happened as few years back.

See in my view that cash or at least a majority of it, should have been given out to the shareholders way back in the form of buyback or dividend but it would seem that the promoter intent is not there to share cash with the shareholders – I see that as them not being aligned with the minority shareholders but ofc it is upto you how you want to judge the same.

The harsh portfolio! (29-01-2024)
There are likely numerous ways to make money and that is the primary purpose of investing.
- What matters is portfolio returns and not individual stock returns.
- The actual returns are only known to the person who is doing the investing. Investing is an individual sport which is not in competition to others. So beyond a point there is no point in such discussions.
- The idea of investing is not necessarily to follow a more publicly defensible/popular idea. If I cannot explain my idea clearly and am still making money, I am happy to follow that. Ideas can be complex.
- My purpose of being in this thread is to get ideas passively and not debate. At least not debate the basic approach of the author. This thread has been incredibly useful to me – in terms of making money by getting ideas.
Certain ideas (like “consistent compounders”) are more popular but we can never know the actual returns made by its practitioners. But investing is not about popularity of ideas rather than XIRR made on the portfolio.
Narayana Hrudayalaya Ltd (29-01-2024)
This sure looks like a promising frachise. Management seems solid. Good balance sheet. Good IT and Robotics solutions. Clinic and insurance are interesting. Cayman has a good potential. Being Bangalore sure would be positive for international customers and on the flip side, may engage lots of insurance patients. All considered , looks good.
Not invested now a d looking to add positions.
Sugar Cycles: 7-8 years of losses followed by 2-3 years of super gains! (29-01-2024)
Balrampur and Avadh will also benefit from better pest control leading to improved recovery (Uttam i am not tracking). While Balramur is fairly valued, there could be upside in earnings from further recovery improvement, and also the regular buyback of shares – this is a very prudent measure which all profit making sugar companies should do. it makes sense to buyback rather than give dividend as the companies are undervalued. They should in fact increase debt.
Companies like Triveni, Dhampur Sugar are fairly valued (may be little higher than peers – as they are more ethanol focused including grain based).
I am positive on DBOL sheerly due to the valuation gap – its operations have improved along with good capacity addition. Mkt will realise this by nxt quarter so till then it is wait for DBOL.
