The Reserve Bank of India’s latest order prohibiting Bajaj Finance from sanctioning and disbursing loans under its ‘eCOM’ and ‘Insta EMI Card’ products may not have serious implications on the non-banking finance company’s profitability, provided the ban is lifted within six to eight weeks, analysts said. “In a surprise move, the RBI has asked Bajaj Finance to stop sanction and disbursal under two of its digital lending products. “While the move is negative, the speed of correction will be key to reinstate products,” global brokerage Jefferies said in a report.

Fintech companies believe that the impact of Reserve Bank of India’s order last week on unsecured loans will be visible in six to 12 months and prompt them to diversify and strengthen their secured portfolio. Fintechs which source funds through banks or non-banking finance companies (NBFCs) are looking at quickly building their secured portfolio options to at least 40 per cent of their total portfolio. “Over the medium to long term, as part of our product strategy, we are evaluating secured products which can be enabled over a digital platform” said Yogi Sadana, the founder of Zype, a lending-focussed fintech.

Fresh formal job creation cooled for the second consecutive month to decline to a six-month low in September, signalling a downturn in the labour markets this financial year. The number of new monthly subscribers under the Employees’ Provident Fund (EPF) declined by 6.45 per cent to 891,583 in September from 953,092 in August, shows the latest payroll data released by the Employees’ Provident Fund Organisation (EPFO). Besides, the net payroll additions — calculated by taking into account the number of new subscribers, the number of exits, and the return of old subscribers — increased by 14.9 per cent to 1.72 million in September from 1.49 million in August.

The net leasing of Grade-A commercial office space in India will stagnate this financial year at 32-34 million square feet, with global uncertainties brewing caution among key tenant categories, according to the latest Crisil Ratings report. Major seven cities in India – Bengaluru, Chennai, Hyderabad, Kolkata, Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR), National Capital Region (NCR) and Pune – had Grade-A office space with an operational stock of around 705 million square feet as of March 2023. India’s commercial office space is dominated by technology companies, with information technology (IT) and IT-enabled services (ITeS) companies occupying 42-45 per cent of the operational stock.
RBI’s move on credit to hit loan growth: Fitch (23-11-2023)
The Reserve Bank of India’s recent decision that require banks and non-bank financial institutions to allocate more capital against unsecured consumer credit will constrain loan growth in the segment, according to a report. This should also reduce the potential for the rising appetite for such lending to weaken financial system stability, a report by Fitch Ratings said on Thursday. “We generally view the tightening as a credit-positive effort by authorities to control emergent systemic risks posed by consumer credit, which has increased rapidly in recent years off a relatively low base,” it said.
Average housing prices rise 13-33% in past 3 yrs (23-11-2023)
Average housing prices have increased in the range of 13-33 per cent in the last three years across seven major cities on high demand, according to real estate consultant Anarock. Hyderabad’s Gachibowli recorded the highest 33 per cent increase in average residential prices in the past three years. In Gachibowli, the average residential prices as of October 2023-end stood at Rs 6,355 per square feet as against Rs 4,790 per square feet in October 2020.

Equity benchmark indices Sensex and Nifty ended almost flat in highly volatile trade on Thursday amid the lack of any immediate trigger. The 30-share BSE Sensex dipped 5.43 points or 0.01 per cent to settle at 66,017.81. During the day, it hit a high of 66,235.24 and a low of 65,980.50.
Near-term headwinds may delay UPL recovery (23-11-2023)
UPL, the country’s largest agrochemical company, had a weak July-September quarter (Q2), reporting a sharp fall in revenues across geographies. Overall, the revenues were down 19 per cent on the back of lower agrochemical prices and inventory destocking. While the overall volumes were down 7 per cent, prices fell by 15 per cent. Volume decline in the European market was on the back of high channel inventory and product bans while in India the fall by 27 per cent was on account of muted demand for segments such as cotton and pulses.
