The ‘angel tax’ provision in the Finance Bill will not impact startups in India, a senior government official said on Tuesday. Startups which are registered with the Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade do not come under the purview, Anurag Jain, the secretary in the department said while speaking at the IVCA Conclave. “Let me put one thing very clearly. It doesn’t affect startups in the least,” he said, addressing the audience at the event organized by the venture capital industry lobby grouping.

Tata Motors, India’s largest electric passenger vehicle manufacturer, has signed an agreement with ride-hailing company Uber to supply 25,000 electric vehicles (EVs), the company said. The agreement is the largest EV commitment between an automotive manufacturer and a ride-sharing platform in India. Under the agreement, Uber will deploy Tata Motors’ XPRES-T EVs by partnering fleet operators in Delhi National Capital Region, Mumbai, Kolkata, Chennai, Hyderabad, Bengaluru, and Ahmedabad.

Linking businesses with account aggregator (AA) network — a financial data sharing platform — will help small entrepreneurs get easy access to credit and create millions of jobs, Infosys Technologies co-founder and chairman Nandan Nilekani said on Tuesday. He made the remarks during a session at the ‘GSV + Emeritus India Summit’ event in Gurugram. In the Budget for FY24, the government said that the GST system could join the account aggregator network, which means that every company in the GST system can ask for its data back which includes their tax filings and invoices, Nilekani said.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday expressed hope that digital transactions will soon surpass cash as Unified Payments Interface (UPI) is increasingly becoming the most preferred payment mechanism in the country. Modi after the launch of the cross-border connectivity between the UPI and PayNow of Singapore said about 74 billion transactions amounting to more than Rs 126 trillion, which is approximately 2 trillion Singapore dolla, was done through UPI in 2022. “Many experts are estimating that very soon India’s digital wallet transactions are going to overtake cash transactions,” he said.
