Smallcap momentum portfolio (16-09-2024)
More often the stock price rebounds from the point where we sell and go up higher to make fresh highs.
We shouldn’t tweak the system for these small things. It should be left to the individuals following this broad strategy.

Smallcap momentum portfolio (16-09-2024)
@visuarchie , hello Vishwanath ji,
As you know , I am also following rank based momentum approach.
My query is
In case of rank based momentum strategy, a stock rises in rank and becomes part of portfolio, if rises in price it will become a profit making position, but while going out of ranking list, it may lose out all the profits it has earned, before going out of portfolio when it goes beyond worst held rank. How to retain such profits?
This happened with Gravita…it went to 38% profit and then came back to 12% profit as rank went down.
Can we do this ??
-
Trailing Stop loss , let’s say at 15% from top, to protect the gain…
-
Ranking + technical indicator like 50 day moving average
-
Partial exit , if rank goes down substantially, even if it’s still in portfolio
I know this will increase churn and I am introducing human bias, but this may be viewed as a risk management or profit retention measure, while rank momentum still being the core principle.
Tata Power Limited (16-09-2024)
India urgently needs privatization of its DISCOMs!
90% of India’s power distribution, controlled by respective state governments, has now become a breeding ground for inefficiencies. The accumulated losses stand at INR 6.5 lakh crore as of FY23, which is well over 20% of India’s central budgeted annual revenue. Reasons?
- 𝐈𝐧𝐞𝐟𝐟𝐢𝐜𝐢𝐞𝐧𝐭 𝐨𝐩𝐞𝐫𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐬: Issues in power procurement, billing, and collection practices
- 𝐇𝐢𝐠𝐡 𝐜𝐨𝐬𝐭𝐬: Rising cost due to higher interest rates, rising power demand, and the cost of imported coal
- 𝐏𝐨𝐨𝐫 𝐜𝐚𝐬𝐡 𝐟𝐥𝐨𝐰: Delayed consumer payments, leading to insufficient cash income, preventing timely payments to energy generators
- 𝐈𝐧𝐬𝐮𝐟𝐟𝐢𝐜𝐢𝐞𝐧𝐭 𝐭𝐚𝐫𝐢𝐟𝐟𝐬: Many times insufficient tariffs can contribute to losses
- 𝐓𝐡𝐞𝐟𝐭: High levels of theft can contribute to losses
One of the only state to have privatized its power distribution is Odisha where 51% stake was taken over by TATA Power, which has swung back to profits and demand continuing to rise 20% YoY due to effective & efficient service. Similar is the case of Delhi which has seen minimal outrage this year despite demand hitting new high in summers. There too, it was Tata Power who played the key role!

They have substantial amount of cash invested in mutual funds as well. You will also have to include that while calculating cash on books.

I feel like you should evaluate based on qualitative factors (operational performance, such as efficiency of operations, competitiveness, business plans and work ethics of the management etc) and quantitative factors (revenues, costs, profitability etc)
In the post, you mentioned the stage/ industry and client for most stocks.
