The regulatory burden is the highest on small cars, a key segment of the Indian automobile industry and having a uniform tax structure across all segments of vehicles will not augur well for the sector growth, according to Maruti Suzuki India chairman RC Bhargava. He also said India’s economic growth rate could be higher if the manufacturing sector grows fast, which ‘unfortunately’ has remained a laggard despite the best efforts of the Narendra Modi-led government at the Centre due to implementation gaps at the ground level. “The burden of regulatory changes on the small cars is far higher than the regulatory burden on big cars and that is changing the whole market behaviour.

Air India’s pilot unions on Monday alleged that working conditions are hostile at the airline and sought Tata group chairman N Chandrasekaran’s intervention to resolve the issues. Tata group took control of loss-making Air India in January this year. The two pilot unions — IPG and ICPA — claimed that despite its unflinching support extended to Air India in its growth and expansion plan, the management has not reciprocated in the same manner.

Net leasing of office space is likely to rise by 41-49 per cent across seven major cities this year on a lower base and improved demand post-pandemic, according to JLL India. Net absorption or leasing of office space stood at 26.2 million square feet in 2021, and it is likely to be in the range of 37-39 million square feet this year across seven cities — Bengaluru, Delhi NCR, Chennai, Hyderabad, Kolkata, Mumbai and Pune. Nevertheless, the net office leasing will remain lower than the record absorption achieved in 2019 — the pre-COVID year — at 47.9 million square feet.

The domestic hospitality industry is looking to ‘fly’ in 2023 cashing in on India’s G20 presidency, having received the ‘oxygen’ to run in 2022 after being crippled in the past two years by the pandemic. Domestic travel, especially the leisure segment, gave wind to the industry this year and is expected to continue into the next. Industry players believe that as international arrivals are also likely to pick up even further, the outlook for 2023 is buoyant.

Domestic rating agency Icra on Monday upped its banking sector outlook to ‘positive’ on healthy asset growth, improving asset quality and stronger capital buffers. The agency expects asset quality to improve to a decadal best of 4 per cent from a gross non-performing assets (NPAs) perspective by the end of FY24. The banking system’s credit growth will slow down to 11-11.6 per cent in FY24, after a very healthy growth of 15.2-16.1 per cent expected in FY23, the rating agency said.
