Deepak Parekh for simpler corporate governance norms (17-11-2022)
Noted banker Deepak Parekh on Thursday pitched for simpler corporate governance norms that focus more on trust than just compliance, saying economics and ethics are not trade-offs but complementary. The HDFC chairman, who was addressing a seminar on corporate governance organised by former Sebi chairman M Damodaran’s advocacy Excellence Enablers in Mumbai, stressed that the ultimate objective should be that corporate governance systems must become simpler and not more complicated.

Polarisation in the performance of Indian banks will persist as many large public sector banks are still saddled with weak assets, high credit costs, and poor earnings, S and P Global Ratings said on Thursday. It said State Bank of India and leading private sector banks have largely addressed their asset quality challenges, and their profitability is improving more sharply than the banking system. In its Global Banking Outlook-2023 report, S and P said economic recovery is driving credit costs to cyclical low levels and stronger balance sheets and higher demand should boost bank loan growth, but deposit growth will lag.
