Amid the funding winter, 128 Indian startups have raised over $995 million (around Rs 8,000 crore) venture capital funding in August, GlobalData said on Thursday. The funds raised in August are 9.7 per cent more than that in the previous month, the data and analytics company said in a statement. Aurojyoti Bose, Lead Analyst at GlobalData, said: “Although the total VC funding amount still remains below $1 billion akin to July, August managed to reverse the decline in fundraising, despite a 2.3 per cent fall in deal volume.”

India defends its decision to ban rice, wheat exports (22-09-2022)
India has defended its decision to ban export of wheat and rice at a WTO meeting even as some member countries have flagged concerns over the country’s stand, an official said. At a meeting last week in Geneva, Senegal, the US and the European Union raised questions over this decision, stating it could have adverse implications on global markets. In May, India restricted export of wheat to enhance domestic availability.

The report found 1,103 Indians with a networth of Rs 1,000 crore each – an increase of 62 per cent over five years. There are 221 billionaires (Rs 100 crore networth) in India on the 2022 list – down 16 compared with last year, while 13 people born in the 1990s made it to the list, all self-made.

Ford India, the subsidiary of United States-based automaker Ford on Thursday said it has arrived at a settlement with the employees union on the severance package following the company’s decision to shut its Tamil Nadu plant as part of a restructuring exercise. Accordingly, the company would revise the final severance settlement to an average equivalent of 140 days of gross wages per completed year of service from the ongoing offer of 130 days. “An additional one-time lump sum of Rs 1.50 lakh will also be included in the final settlement.” Ford India said in a statement.

The rupee depreciated 51 paise to an all-time low of 80.47 against the US dollar in early trade on Thursday after the US Federal Reserve’s interest rate hike and its hawkish stance weighed on investor sentiments. At the interbank foreign exchange, the local currency was trading at 80.47 against the dollar, down 51 paise from its previous close. The rupee opened at 80.27 and touched a record low of 80.47 a dollar in initial deals.
