Airtel to launch 5G within a month (07-09-2022)
Telecom operator Bharti Airtel expects to launch 5G services within a month and cover key metros by December, a top official of the company said on Wednesday. The telco plans to cover all urban areas of the country by the end of 2023, according to the company’s CEO. Bharti Airtel CEO Gopal Vittal in a communication to the customers said Airtel 5G will deliver dramatically higher speeds of 20-30 times compared to a 4G network.
New data laws likely to be rolled out in 3-4 months (07-09-2022)
The government is expected to roll out new data laws, including the data privacy bill and Digital India Act, in the next 3-4 months, Union Minister Rajeev Chandrasekhar said on Wednesday. While speaking at the US-India Business Council (USIBC) event, the Minister of State for Electronics and IT said that the digital economy in the country is going to be $1 trillion, which will account for 25 per cent of the total GDP by 2025-26. “You will see in very quick succession almost together over the next three to four months these new rules and laws and regulations be rolled out. “It will be subject to intense public consultation, stakeholder consultation,” he said.
Banks urged to push cross-border rupee trade (07-09-2022)
Reserve Bank and the finance ministry on Wednesday asked top management of banks and representative of trade bodies to push exports and import transactions in rupee. It was stressed during a meeting that banks should connect with their foreign counterparts for opening special rupee vastro accounts to facilitate cross-border trade in Indian currency rather than popular mode dollar, sources said. Trade associations and their foreign trading partners should explore opportunities to make use of the framework, sources added.
‘India can deal with growth and inflation challenges’ (07-09-2022)
India is in a much better position to deal with the challenges related to growth and inflation, said Sanjiv Bajaj, president of industry body CII. According to official figures, India’s retail inflation continues to remain above the Reserve Bank’s tolerance level of 6 per cent since January, while the economic growth in the first quarter of the fiscal was 13.5 per cent, lower than the central bank’s estimate of 16.2 per cent. “I don’t want to say we don’t have our own challenges with growth, with inflation but we are in a much better position and credit must go to everybody including the central and state governments.
Sensex, Nifty settle lower amid weak global markets (07-09-2022)
Benchmark BSE Sensex and Nifty ended lower on Wednesday, dragged down by losses in banking stocks amid weak global market trends. The 30-share Sensex declined by 168.08 points or 0.28 per cent to settle at 59,028.91. During the day, it fell 474.1 points or 0.80 per cent to 58,722.89. The broader NSE Nifty dipped 31.20 points or 0.18 per cent to 17,624.40.
Ex-NSE MD Ravi Narain sent to 2-day ED custody (07-09-2022)
A Delhi court on Wednesday sent former MD and CEO of National Stock Exchange Ravi Narain to two days’ custodial interrogation by Enforcement Directorate in a money laundering case related to alleged illegal phone tapping and snooping on stock exchange employees. Special Judge Sunena Sharma allowed ED’s plea seeking Narain’s custody till September 9 after the accused was produced before him by the probe agency. ED’s Special Public Prosecutor N K Matta told the court that Narain was required to be confronted with other accused persons and evidence in the matter to unearth the larger conspiracy in the matter.
‘PSB privatisation will impact economy in 2 ways’ (07-09-2022)
Former RBI governor D Subbarao has suggested that the government should come up with a 10-year road map for privatisation of all Public Sector Banks (PSBs) as it would provide much needed predictability to stakeholders. Subbarao further said that the big bang approach to privatisation of state-owned banks is not desirable but at the same time the issue should not be put on the back burner. “Ideally, we should have a road map, maybe over a 10 year timeframe, to privatise all PSBs. “That will give much needed predictability to all stakeholders,” he told PTI.
