DIY Momentum QnA and Discussion (24-06-2024)
Price momentum:
This involves selecting stocks that have shown strong price performance over a specific period. The basic idea is that stocks that have performed well in the recent past will continue to do so in the near future. This strategy is based on the tendency of stock prices to exhibit persistence, where the momentum effect suggests that trends in price movements can continue for some time.
For example, a price momentum strategy might involve looking at the top 10% of stocks based on their returns over the last 6 to 12 months and then investing in those stocks. Investors using this approach believe that the positive price trends are likely to persist due to factors like market sentiment, investor behavior, or continued strong fundamentals.

DP charges are the lowest with Finvasia among the brokers, I have checked a couple of years ago. But, if the churn is not big and there is a good system in place, charges will not make a big impact, not to mention the fact that if a system is scalable and can handle more funds, the effect of charges will diminish further, also, I don’t think we cannot do anything about the taxes levied by governing bodies, except wishing they collect less.
DIY Momentum QnA and Discussion (24-06-2024)
I will try to explain different types of factor investing in momentum strategy and will explain in detail of each Factor in coming time. Factor investing in momentum strategy typically involves selecting stocks based on various momentum-related factors. Here are some common types:
-
Price momentum: Selecting stocks that have had high returns over a specific period, assuming they will continue to perform well.
-
Earnings momentum: Choosing stocks with positive earnings surprises or upward earnings revisions, expecting continued strong performance.
-
Revenue momentum: Focusing on companies with accelerating revenue growth.
-
Return on equity (ROE) momentum: Investing in companies with improving return on equity.
-
Volume momentum: Considering stocks with increasing trading volumes, indicating growing investor interest.
-
Momentum Z-score: Using statistical measures like Z-score to identify stocks with extreme price movements compared to the average, assuming a continuation or mean reversion.
These factors can be combined or used individually to create a momentum-based investment strategy.

Sona Comstar BLW – Direct EV Play (24-06-2024)
Hi Community,
Would like to share a though and seek your feedback!
Sona BLW is a R&D driven organization and playing in the EV adoption theme. EV adoption is inevitable, now or later cars will transition to EV, management also said that by the end of 2035 most of the automobiles are going to be EV.
I have the following thesis points:
- All the products produced by Sona BLW, especially motor and allied components are relevant irrespective of the power source. Even if the furture is Hydrogen, you still need motors.
- Motors are also be used in robotics and drones, and sona can either develop or acquire a company that develop such niche motors. Sona BLW already develop motors for Bots.
- This company has one of the best management team in the sector, maybe that’s why Singapore government fund has 8% stake in the company. Generally, such long only fund doesn’t take big stake in any company just like that.
- If company does a strategic acquisition, it can be one of the diversified player to cater the whole ecosystem of EV market.
Company is trading at rich valuation, it does justified as there are not many companies who has such a unique business model.
What do you think of the company and do you think Sona BLW is long term portfolio stock, that you can keep in your portfolio for the next 10-15years? Could it be a silent wealth creator?

I have not used their service, so will not be able to comment if the list is the same or not. I preferred to do things myself. It does not take me more than 15 min every weekend to process this data. This activity and subsequent results gives me a lot of satisfaction.

The overall reduction in XIRR is couple of % points. When the XIRR of pf is 80%+, I don’t mind losing some to DP charges or STT.

I follow different rebalancing strategy for different market caps. For this and the microcap pf, I do weekly. For midcap, it is 15 days and for Nifty 50 / Next 50, I do it monthly.
I believe 3 months is too long even for a large cap pf.
Churn costs will come down, but I guess the risks will be a lot higher.
We are looking at creating a pf that is system driven without any discretion. Therefore, if we keep a rebalancing frequency that is distant, you might be tempted to rebalance using discretion.
