So, the first thing to do is to decide whether you are a trader with an investment horizon of less than one year; a short-term investor looking to invest for one to three years; or a long-term investor with an investment horizon of more than three years. "Long-term stock investors should get into the market with a 'land' mindset. When you buy land on the outskirts of a city, you don't expect returns for the next 10-15 years," says Rajiv Deep Bajaj, Vice-Chairman and Managing Director, Bajaj Capital.

If you want to be both a trader and an investor, you have to plan accordingly. "If investors want to do both, they need to allocate capital between trading and investing, and stick to the allocations, irrespective of the market conditions," says Bansal. Ensuring discipline is very important otherwise you may end up with huge losses.
