Street children make the most of the sand and the surf at Mumbai’s popular Chowpatty beach. Rampant poverty and high unemployment cause school drop-outs and induce thousands to come to Mumbai in search of livelihood. The authorities periodocally raid local businesses with a view to ‘rescuing’ the children employed therein. However, whether such ‘rescue’ attempts will achieve any purpose without long-term rehabilitation measures remains to be seen.
