Radhakishan Damani, the legendary investor, is a recluse. Few people have seen him or heard him talk.
However, Rakesh Jhunjhunwala never tires of talking about him and of referring to him as his “Guru” and “Mentor”.
On the occasion of the Badshah’s 50th birthday, Udayan Mukherjee asked him “Who do you count amongst your mentors in the market”.
Rakesh paused for a moment and said softly “Mentor is only one, Mr. Radhakishan Damani”.
The Badshah explained that Radhakishan Damani has had a profound influence on him. “I learnt trading from him” he said. “He has wisdom, extreme patience and humility”. “The patience he has to hear the other person’s point of view is unbelievable”. “He taught me life and shaped my nature. If he and my father had not been there to guide me, I would not have achieved such success”, the Badshah added with utmost humility in his voice.
As expected, Radhakishan Damani was embarrassed at the Badshah’s tribute. “He gives so much respect to me that it puts me in an embarrassing position so many times” Radhakishan said, laughing heartily.
Radhakishan Damani in turn set out the Badshah’s reasons for success. “He takes calculated risks and is always disciplined. He has great vision and conviction and knows what he has to achieve”.
Another stalwart who came in for special praise from Rakesh Jhunjhunwala is Nemish S. Shah of ex-Enam. “I don’t think there is a better analyst of the Indian stock market than Nemish Shah. There is not and there will not be”, the Badshah declared in an authoritative tone.
Rakesh Jhunjhunwala also paid tribute to Ramesh Damani, saying that he had shaped the Badshah’s outlook to international issues. He also referred to veteran investor Kamal Kabra as a person he has great respect for.
